Your Email List Is the Only Audience You Actually Own
“You don't own your social media pages or audience.”
I know you know this. But so many solopreneurs still aren't doing it.
BUILD YOUR EMAIL LIST!
I know, right. It's business 101. We all know we should be doing it, but with the sixty billion other things on the list, it often falls into the "too hard" basket and just... stays there.
So, let's fix that. But first, let’s talk about why your social media following isn't actually yours.
You don't own your social media audience
Social media is brilliant for visibility. But here's the thing: you don't own your social media pages or your audience. You're essentially building your business on rented land. Algorithms change, platforms go quiet, accounts get flagged, and overnight, your reach can disappear. Your email list? That's yours! Yes, still on a rented platform but you can download your mailing list at any time. And yes, you should be doing a monthly systems backup, but that’s a blog for another day.
The numbers don't lie
Email consistently outperforms social media when it comes to actually reaching people. The average organic reach of a Facebook post is somewhere around 2–5% of your followers. An email lands directly in someone's inbox and if you've built your list with people who genuinely want to hear from you, open rates can sit anywhere from 20–40% or higher.
That's not a small difference. That's the difference between whispering into a crowd and having a real conversation.
It's a relationship, not a broadcast
The best email lists aren't just databases. They're communities of people who've said "yes, I want to hear from you." When you send an email, you're not competing with twelve other posts in a feed. You have their attention, even for just a moment, and that's where real trust gets built.
The solopreneurs who consistently convert leads into clients are almost always the ones with a warm, engaged email list behind them.
You need the right tools to make it work
Here's where a lot of solopreneurs get stuck. Building an email list sounds straightforward until you realise you need a way to capture subscribers, send emails, automate follow-ups, and track what's actually working, all without spending your whole week on it.
This is exactly why the right tools matter. If you're still juggling multiple subscriptions to piece it all together, it might be worth looking at an all-in-one option. I created BizCentral specifically for Australian solopreneurs who want email marketing, automations and CRM in one place without the tech headache. Check out bizcentral.com.au if you're curious.

Start with your lead magnet, it’s easier than you think!
The thing that stops most people isn't email marketing itself. It's not having anything to offer people in exchange for their email address. And here's what I want you to hear: your lead magnet doesn't have to be some big, beautifully designed thing that takes weeks to create.
Here’s what I want you to try! Take 15–30 minutes a day over the next five days:
Look back at social media posts that performed well. Could one of them become something useful for your audience?
Think about the questions you get asked all the time. Could you turn one into a checklist, a workbook, or a short pre-recorded video?
Think about one simple step someone could take that would make a real difference. Create an action list, a simple reminder, a template.
Use what you already know. Use what will genuinely help people right now. That's your lead magnet. It really is that simple.
The bottom line
You don't need a big audience to start. You don't need a perfect funnel or a fancy automation sequence on day one. You just need to start. Add a sign-up form to your website, attach your lead magnet, and send something valuable once a week or fortnight.
So, stop waiting for the perfect moment. There isn't one. Just start.
